If you live in Columbia, Suwannee, Hamilton, or Lafayette County Florida and need help, you can contact Catholic Charities. The agency has a regional office for the area. Some of the programs offered provide assistance with housing, homeless services, mortgages, utilities, and more. No matter what your religion is, where you come from, or what culture you belong to, you can apply for help. You don’t have to be Catholic to get assistance.
Emergency utility and rental assistance is available by appointment only, has restrictions, and is limited in funding. To schedule an appointment for assistance, please call 386-754-9180. The funding is meant to help people who are either homeless or at risk of having their utilities shut off. Other housing resources that may be offered include mortgage assistance.
There are other emergency services that can help with things like getting prescriptions and vouchers for approved medications. This is especially helpful when someone is seriously ill. When starting a new job, free gasoline may be offered for job interviews or doctor appointments. Other items provided include clothing, personal hygiene items, and referrals to other area Florida and federal government agencies.
This means that most of the aid is given to families who don’t have any other help available to them, or who have already tried every other government or non-profit program. Social workers will provide limited cash assistance and help guide people to stabilization and long term sufficiency.
The main point is that the Lake City Regional Office of Catholic Charities helps those who are low income or in need in some way. They can offer assistance with rent or mortgage payments, utility bills, a food pantry, homeless services, and Christmas or holiday assistance. In Suwannee, Hamilton, Lafayette and Columbia counties in Florida, there are plenty of resources available.
The Food Bank of Suwannee Valley also provides groceries and food. This center is affiliated with Catholic Charities and provides services to residents of Union, Columbia, Hamilton, and Suwannee Counties in Florida. The low income in the region are provided with canned goods, holiday meals, and other support. There are certain foods that come in packaging that doesn’t require cooking, and can be eaten as is. These are known as “pop top” foods, and can be requested by those who don’t have access to proper cooking facilities. Free Christmas meals may be distributed to those in need. The Lake City location has other food assistance programs that are available a few days each week. The number of hours worked and the way the hours are distributed is limited, so please keep that in mind.
We are always in need of donations, contributions, and volunteers. Your donations and contributions are tax deductible. The majority of money donated to Catholic Charities goes to helping those in poverty in the donor’s region and will fund emergency services in the community.
If you want to get involved and give back to the community, call us and we’ll help you out. If you want to help other people and don’t know where to start, Catholic Charities can help you. If you engage in charitable work, your children will likely do the same, instilling a sense of giving back to society.
