Housing assistance in Illinois.

There are more housing assistance programs available in Illinois than what is listed on this site. To find out what programs are available in your county, contact the Illinois Department of Human Services. The focus is on keeping people from becoming homeless. This means that if you are a qualified family or individual who is facing a crisis, you may be able to get a grant to help pay your rent and/or utility bills. There may be money available for part of a mortgage payment, but it is limited. The table lists the main programs and agencies in each county and town.

The funding is given to the agencies every year. The programs are considered to be of utmost importance and are thus primarily funded by the state and federal government. The amount of money for housing assistance will vary from year to year, and there are usually more people wanting help than there is money. This means that only a limited number of people will be able to meet the requirements to qualify.

The money will be used to stop people from becoming homeless and to help families stay together. Both unpaid debts and current expenses can be paid. Enrollment in the program is only available to Illinois residents who are about to be evicted, are in danger of foreclosure, and are close to becoming homeless.

In addition to any funding that is provided, applicants will need to participate in a number of case management services. This will include help with securing housing that is affordable, employment services, and teaching financial literacy skills. Those supportive services include finding and inspecting housing, providing counseling, following up with clients, and outreach to potential clients.
