The Basic Needs Committee is a group created by local churches, including Nativity Parish, that helps low-income families in Monmouth County, New Jersey and the surrounding area. Some of the more basic, and critical, needs that can be met with emergency financial assistance include utility and rental assistance, food, money for security deposits, and prescription medications. If you are in need of assistance, the Basic Needs Committee may be able to help you. However, there is a limited amount of aid available, and only a few people can receive help each week. They collaborate with other charities in the area, like St. Anselm in Tinton Falls, St. Vincent DePaul Societies, Project Paul, the parishes of St. Mary in Colts Neck, St. Leo in Lincroft, and St. Anthony in Red Bank, as well as Catholic Charities of New Jersey.
Some organizations hand out holiday food baskets to families in need around Thanksgiving and Christmas. This is usually done through churches or other community groups. Many of the items are given to us by kind people in the community who donate things they no longer need. This food pantry provides canned vegetables, boxed stuffing and potatoes, fruit juices, boxed desserts, coffee and tea, cranberry sauce, and canned fruit to those in need. Some food items are also distributed from nearby churches and parishes, including Christ the King, St. Dorothea’s and St. Anthony’s. It is important for people to celebrate the holidays, especially families with children.
The Basic Needs Committee not only collects food and holiday meals, but also gifts for the elderly and senior citizens who reside in local nursing homes. These gifts should be labeled as male or female and wrapped. The presents should be left under the tree on any Sunday during the holiday season. The donated items will be delivered as they are needed.
The Family Promise Program is a program that helps families in need. It is run by the Basic Needs Committee. The organization can provide a temporary place to stay for low income families who are going through a difficult time. A total of eleven churches in the Monmouth County area provide services on a rotating schedule. Each church will provide lodging, food, and meals for up to one week for the guests of Family Promise. This housing program is also financed by the treasury of the Basic Needs Committee as well as private donations. Social workers from other government agencies can help people find long term, permanent housing.
The program is always looking for new volunteers and/or donations. The church and committee are looking for volunteers and donations for the service. If you are able to help out, please contact them. Phone number: 741-7868
The most essential needs for food, clothing, rent, and shelter are all taken care of. Different programs and fund raisers are always taking place because they are always in need of funds and donations. In past years during the season of Advent, the Basic Needs Committee has collected money and also sold Sand Dollar Christmas Ornaments to be used on the Nativity Christmas Tree. People donate money to help those who are struggling to make ends meet or have lost everything due to a natural disaster. The money goes towards providing food, shelter, and other necessities to those in need.
