The OCAB Community Action Agency provides assistance to residents of Orangeburg, Allendale, Bamberg, and Calhoun counties. This non-profit helps people who don’t have much money, people who don’t have a job, and older people. If you need help and are willing to work to become more independent, there may be programs that can assist you.

The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) is a federal and state government program that helps low-income households pay for their utility bills. There is a component that is operated throughout the year and another, called the Crisis Intervention Program, which is for households facing a disconnection.

Financial assistance and cash grants are available to help people pay for heating or air conditioning services, repair heating devices or furnaces during the winter, or purchase fans during the hot summer months. The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program provides assistance to low-income families across Orangeburg, Bamberg, and other counties. This program helps families with their energy bills and make their homes more energy-efficient.

The OCAB processes applications for utility bill assistance. Customers with low incomes who apply for Direct Assistance in the fall may receive one-time payments or credits to help with energy costs. If you don’t qualify for this program then the agency may offer referrals for other programs.

The Head Start program provides early childhood education, health, and nutrition services to low-income children and families. Development assistance, including educational support and basic health care, is available for children under the age of 5. The Head Start program is designed to help children develop in all areas of their life, including their physical, cognitive, emotional, psychological, medical and social development. This includes helping children with disabilities, too.

The community action agency provides support to parents and families through services such as family partnerships, education, social services, nutrition, health care, transportation, and transition services. The Workforce Investment Act (WIA) is a federal government program that provides job training and employment assistance. If you live in Orangeburg or Calhoun County, you may be eligible for help from OCAB Community Action Agency. There are resources for unemployed adults through the Summer Youth Employment and In-School Youth Services. The Workforce Investment Act (WIA) provides funding for programs that offer young people pre-employment skills training, instruction in basic academic and job-related skills, and paid work experience.

The Senior Companion program provides support to elderly people who need assistance with tasks such as shopping, going to appointments, and light housework. Volunteers help with everyday tasks, provide company and support, and lend a hand with other needs for elderly residents. This will also help the people who are taking care of them most of the time and often prevents the need for them to be in a place like a hospital.
