Free prescription drugs from hospital charity programs
A West Virginia program that provides free prescription drugs to those who don’t have insurance will be enrolling thousands of additional state residents. West Virginia Rx has formed partnerships with hospitals, charity organizations, and two other groups which will cause the prescription assistance program to grow by 400%.
This aid is for people who do not have insurance or any kind of drug coverage. Health insurance coverage for prescription drugs is a separate and distinct type of coverage from general health insurance. Having health insurance does not guarantee prescription drug coverage, and vice versa. However, having both can help offset the costs of both types of care.
The West Virginia Rx program will now cover more than 5,000 people who are currently in the Community Access Program of the Partners in Health Network. The Health Network is a group of 13 West Virginia hospitals, seven community health centers, and one health department that are located in more rural parts of the state.
In addition to the 5,000 people from Charleston Area Medical Center’s charity care unit and health program, another example of the prescription drug program will also be included. This means that those who qualify for free or reduced-cost hospital care will also qualify for free prescription drugs and other benefits.
About a quarter of all charity hospital care in West Virginia is provided by CAMC.
West Virginia is the first state in the nation to have a program that coordinates hospital charity care programs with a charitable pharmacy program. This means that a large portion of West Virginian residents do not have insurance that covers prescription drugs, so they have to pay for them out of pocket. This can be a struggle for many people, as medical bills can be expensive. If you don’t have health or prescription coverage, you can still get free health care at community clinics in West Virginia.
