If you live in New Mexico and your family has a low income, you can get money to help pay for school supplies that you need. The state offers two different programs to help students. One program is focused on foster children and the other program will assist households living in poverty. If you need help paying for school supplies or uniforms, the state may be able to help.
The state will provide the family additional money from TANF. All the money needs to be used to buy school supplies. There is a large selection of things that can be bought, for example: clothes, uniforms, notebooks, shoes, laptops, pens, pencils, tablets, and more. In order to receive additional back to school assistance, the resident needs to be enrolled in TANF – Temporary Assistance for Needy Families. This means the applicant needs to meet all of the government guidelines for this entitlement.
If a student’s family is not enrolled in benefit programs, the student still has many other options available. Organizations that give to children in need often have supplies of school materials, or know where to get them for free.
Applications for school supplies in New Mexico
There are two government agencies that process applications for citizenship. The two departments responsible for children, youth, and families are the Children, Youth, and Families Department (CYFD) and the Human Services Department (HSD). The social workers in these offices will help you with your applications, give you referrals, and tell you about programs that can give you school supplies if you are living in poverty.
The goal is to make sure that kids have what they need to be able to focus on learning while in class. It is important for children to have the right clothing for different activities to build their confidence. They will feel more comfortable in the school and not feel out of place.
New Mexico families who have low incomes will generally get an extra cash voucher to use from June to August. The amount of money that parents will have to pay for their children to attend the camp will depend on how many children they have, but it will likely be somewhere between $25 and $100 per child. This varies depending on the amount of money that was set aside for this purpose. If you need help paying for school uniforms or supplies, let us know. Foster families and children can receive additional money to help pay for back-to-school supplies. This means that the Children, Youth, and Families Department will help with this part. The caregiver will be able to get books, backpacks, uniforms, clothing, and a lot more. If the family is receiving TANF benefits, then they can also receive benefits from this program.
This means that over 10,000 students will be helped by TANF each year in New Mexico. The Human Services Department will help families for the upcoming year, but they need to apply when they first need help. If they do not ask for help from the special back to school program, the state will not know they need it. More information on who to contact is provided below.
