The Society of St. Vincent de Paul is a religious organisation that provides financial assistance to people in need. They are part of a charity organization that can provide short-term aid and long-term self-sufficiency. Providing food for those who are hungry and in need is always a priority. The church and its partner agencies have several resources available to make this happen. Any children and elderly depend heavily on these programs. These programs provide them with basic needs such as food and shelter.

A Mobile Soup Kitchen is a place where people in Somerset County can go to get a hot meal. This location is funded by SHIP and other donations from local residents. The center provides free hot meals to people in the parking lot of St. Joseph Church. This is usually offered a few times per month. Volunteers may serve hot meals at different times and locations.

There are other free food and meal programs in addition to the ones mentioned. There will be a monthly lunch event that will be able to serve dozens of low income and/or homeless people. There may also be free bread, pastries and bagels given out each week. A pantry on site will help with weekly grocery shopping and distributing food to those in need. This giveaway of boxed food will happen at the Parish Center a couple times each month.

A number of needs can be met, including basic needs. There will be a free distribution of gently used clothes at the Parish Center, including winter coats. This location will also provide household items, appliances, toys and stuffed animals to qualified families that are re-entering society after staying in shelters.

St. Vincent de Paul of Somerset County runs a number of Christmas, Thanksgiving, and other holiday programs. The event will have holiday toy giveaways and Thanksgiving sit-down dinners for hundreds of people. There may also be seasonal distribution of Christmas dinner bags.

There is financial assistance available in Somerset County, although it may be more limited than in other counties. This is only for special needs in a crisis, and this will be very constrained by funding levels and other restrictions. In some cases, you may be able to make a partial payment for rent or a utility bill if you’re experiencing an emergency or a life-threatening situation.

Many of the things that are given to people who are less fortunate and poor come from kind people who live in Somerset County. If you have the means to do so, please donate food or clothes to the food pantry or clothing closet. You can leave non-perishable items in the vestibule of St. Joseph Church. If it is not convenient to drop off the food at the food bank, then the groceries can be dropped off at the Parish Center.

The Parish Center is open during business hours for people to bring in new or gently used clothing, small appliances, toys, and other household items. St. Vincent will give everything to the less fortunate in Somerset County. One way to give back to your community is to volunteer your time and talents at a food bank, feeding location, toy, or clothing giveaway. This is a great way to help those in need and to make a difference in your community. This means giving money to someone or something as a way to help them financially. All donations for the Society of Saint Vincent programs will need to be placed in the poor box at St. Joseph Church. The money donated will be used to fund the various programs and will also stay in the local community. The Society of St. Vincent de Paul can help you support your community and neighbors.

Other social services that may be available include help with getting medical assistance and AIDS testing. Get access to education and job training services, which can include classes in English as a Second Language (ESL).
