Tom Moran, the owner of Moran Iron Works in Onaway, Michigan, created a charity fund. He created the Moran Iron Works Fund to provide financial assistance to patients in need who are from the surrounding cities, towns, and communities. The founder of the company is also a member of the Northern Michigan Regional Hospital Foundation Board of Trustees, and he currently serves as the secretary of the Northern Michigan Regional Health System Board of Trustees.
The financial assistance fund is designed to help those who cannot afford medical supplies, hospital bills, minor medical equipment, prescription medications and travel expenses related to healthcare and hospital stays. Since it was established, it has helped an average of 10 people per month.
The financial assistance fund was created with a large initial $50,000 donation, $10,000 of which will be set aside to help patients with expenses each year for the next five years. Donations are always accepted and new money is constantly being added to the fund. So far this year, the charity fund has given out almost $5,000 to help people from Cheboygan and Presque Isle counties with their healthcare costs.
