People’s Place is a organization that helps provides resources such as food, clothes, and other necessities to people in Sussex, Kent, and New Castle County Delaware who live in poverty or have a low income. The non-profit will help individuals who qualify find their path to independence and self-sufficiency. Services are available for veterans, the homeless, and the working poor in the area.

Abriendo Puertas is a crisis housing and shelter program that helps Latina women and their children. The shelter is for people who need a safe place to stay because they are experiencing domestic violence. The Sussex County Family Center also provides other services, such as case management, family therapy, and services to help people transition to a new job. Whatcoat Social Services provides assistance. The organization may provide low-income families and individuals with transitional housing, case management services, and short-term shelter. Enrollment is open to anyone, but priority for housing or rent assistance is given to victims of domestic violence, homeless individuals, and families.

Whatcoat Social Services can also provide other forms of assistance. The Center for Community Justice is a program offered by Peoples Place in partnership with the State of Delaware. The program provides support and resources for people who have been involved in the criminal justice system. The program helps participants to reintegrate into the community and to find stable housing, employment, and other services. This program offers mediation services for victims and offenders of non-violent crimes. The center offers a variety of mediation services to employers and employees to resolve disputes. Other forms of mediation are also available.

Counselors will meet with clients to discuss and try to resolve disagreements between landlords and tenants, neighbors, roommates, friends, or co-workers. There are counseling centers in four Delaware cities: Millsboro, Milford, Seaford, and Smyrna. This non-profit organization provides many social and emergency services to children and adults, including prescription medication management and individual and family therapy. The people who use these centers either come because they have heard about the services themselves or because they have been referred by a doctor, charity, or social service agency. Licensed doctors and mental health therapists can provide a range of therapies for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, anxiety, eating disorders, and other behavioral problems.

Independent Living is a program for former and current foster youth under the age of 21. The goal of the program is to help youth become self-sufficient and successful adults. The programs will help the individuals to be independent, have a safe and healthy place to live, and reach their full potential. Some of the services include help with money, finding a job and getting training, planning for education, help with rent, developing social skills, and accessing resources from community organizations. The SAFE program provides shelter and advocacy services to victims of domestic violence in the state of Delaware, including the counties of Kent and Sussex. Sanctuary Model: Peoples Place will provide emergency shelter in a safe and supportive environment that emphasizes personal empowerment. Domestic violence survivors often partner with social workers in order to gain the support and assistance they need to become stable. Meeting with staff to discuss finding a job and receiving help to settle into transitional housing. Advocates also work with the Department of Children, Youth, and their Families. The outreach to veteran communities is always a priority. This service is provided by People’s Place in partnership with the Delaware Commission of Veterans Affairs. The program provides military members, veterans and their families with various types of support.

The resources are for those veterans who live in areas from lower New Castle County up to and including the Delaware-Maryland line. The services offered by the VA range from helping veterans access state and federal benefits, to providing career counseling and medical care. Prescription drugs and mental health counseling are also available, as well as free transportation to medical facilities and hospitals if needed.
